Before there was The Girl on the Train, before there was Gone Girl, there was Rosamund Lupton's Sunday Times top-ten bestseller Sister Their bond was unbreakable. The truth was unimaginable. When Beatrice gets a frantic call in the middle of Sunday lunch to say that her younger sister, Tess, is missing, she boards the first flight home to London. But as she learns about the circumstances surrounding her Tess's disappearance, she is stunned to discover how little she actually knows of her sister's life - and unprepared for the terrifying truths she must now face. The police, Beatrice's fiance and even her mother accept they have lost Tess, but Beatrice refuses to give up on her. So she embarks on a dangerous journey to discover the truth, no matter the cost. Praise for Sister: 'Truly marvellous! As compelling as it is stylish, Sister exists in that rare place where crime fiction and literature coincide' Jeffery Deaver 'Nicci French via Ford Madox Ford. Sister is so ably done, so perceptive about grief and guilt and self-delusion' John O'Connell, Guardian 'With Sister, Lupton enters the highly charged ring where the best psychological detective writers spar, her hands raised in a victory clench ...Like Kate Atkinson, Patricia Highsmith and Ruth Rendell, Lupton builds suspense not only around the causes and details of her story's brutal denouement, but also around the personalities ...Both tear-jerking and spine-tingling' New York Times 'Lupton's crisp insights into grief and familial guilt are married to a confidently executed plot. Lupton's persuasive narrative voice is what keeps this classy debut (on track)' Emma Hagestadt, Independent 'Stunningly accomplished from first page to last, this is the most exciting debut thriller I've read all year ...Written with the power and panache of a young Daphne du Maurier; it's devastatingly good' Daily Mail 'Rosamund Lupton's Sister grips like a vice' Sunday Times 'Superb debut novel ...the literary equivalent of "scream if you want to go faster" - and, just when you think things are slowing down to a peaceful, settled resolution, there's one more stomach-churning final turn in store' Radio Times 'A remarkable piece of work . ..Lupton shrewdly and compassionately peels back the story's rich layers ...providing a genuinely wicked sting at the end. But the key to Sister is Bee's voice: clear, strong, single-minded, and not to be denied' Seattle Times 'The narrative process is so intimate and delicate ...the stop-and-start associative movement of Bee's voice is, as a British review wrote, "utterly compelling". And the ending, however gently foreshadowed, is a stunner' Houston Chronicle 'Lupton's remarkable debut is a masterful, superlative-inspiring success that will hook readers (and keep them guessing) from page one ...A chilling, gripping, tragic heart-warming, life-affirming enigma of a story' Booklist (starred review) 'Fast-paced, absurdly entertaining ...Along with a juicy mystery, it resounds with an authentic sense of sisterly love and loyalty' Boston Globeshow more
Just completed this book and had been totally engrossed - a page turner. Engrossing and intriguing, constantly wondering who done it. Writing style very different to the norm but ever so effective. For a debut novel I found it very impressive and look forward to Rosamund Lupton's next release.
A fantastic debut novel that had me hooked from the start. Come and check out my full review at www.ourbookclub.net.au/SmartCrime.php
A really great book that you do not want to put down. I loved the writing style, sophisticated yet personal with good attention to detail. As a reader i could easily relate to the sisters relationship. The crime thriller aspect of the story worked really well! A highly recommended read!
Could not put this book down. Loved the characters and really felt I could relate being a sister myself. The ending was brilliant. My favorite read for the last 12 months.
I really didn't like this book. I just finished it because I had nothing else to read. I didn't like the main character or her sister and didn't care what happened to either of them by the time that I got to the end. Very dissappointing.
Briliant book - enjoyed from start to finish. Have just ordered her second book!
I read almost 3/4 of this book, but towards the end I got bored with it ...and gave up....it didnt excite me enough to finish it ..started off well..a different style of writing than what I am used to reading ..but the narrative kept drifting off in different directions and if you werent concentrating you got lost ...and detatched from what was going on ...
One of the best books I have read all year. Compelling and full of great twists. I don't understand how anyone didn't enjoy it!
Could not put this book down! It had me captivated until the final pages, throwing in a twist for good measure. Loved the way it was written, believed the characters and was even frightened in places. Great reading!
I love this book, it is truly fantastic. Written by a great author who throws in many twists that will leave you shocked. You really get attached to Beatrice whilst she is hunting down the truth surrounding her sister's disappearance and whether she really knows her sister as much as she thinks.
This is a really great! book. I read it the day I got it as I couldn't put it down! Loved it
MUST READ! fantastic book and so well written! found that I could not put it down and so spent the weekend cosy in the sunroom with this book.
this was a great read i couldnt put it down.
I enjoyed this novel. The ending was unusual but made sense of many of the things mentioned throughout the story. The growth in the main character as she abandons her shallow and not happy life in her quest for the truth of what happened to her sister gives depth to the novel also. Not for everyone but worth a read for lovers of psychological dramas.
At the start, I could not put this book down. It is very easy to read and was moving along at a very good pace. The relationship between the sisters is so touching, so beautiful, I was close to tears from the very first page. However, once I got past a two thirds mark, the story started to drag on and I began to lose interest. The twist at the end spoilt the whole book for me, however I didn't mind the end itself. Overall, a pretty good book and I have recommended it to several people.
I enjoyed the first part of this book; sharing in Beatrice's trauma and search for truth...couldn't put it down for half the day! However the story style gets draggy and I felt that the twist to the ending became incredulous did not quite gel with the initial storyline.
This was great for the first 3/4! However, I found the ending a bit incredulous and unrealistic- in saying that, the good bits made up for the bad!
I bought this book because it seemed everyone was giving it rave reviews. HOWEVER, I have read better crime fiction.
I really liked it even though it took me a fair while to actually finish it
It's a good read, enjoyable and keeps you guessing, even though I lost interest in some parts for a few moments, facts seem to be overly detailed in parts of the book which in my opinion affected the tight structure and the flow. Overall well written and recommended
I liked "Sister"--it was suspenseful and beautifully written. I thought it was similar to "We Need to Talk About Kevin" and "Before I Go to Sleep" in the way it was written and how it held your attention to the very last page. Keen to Lupton's "Afterwards" now...
I only got half way through this book and then put it down. I think it just doesn't get you in and gets a little confusing. I am going to try and finish it in view of the reviews that make reference to the ending
Very enjoyable and recommended it to several friends whom also liked it. Good suspense.
I studied this in English at school last year and it was fantastic. I stayed up hours just to find out what would happen next and finished it within days. Its incredibly gripping and a fantastic read. You connect with the characters and you follow them as the story progresses. Such an amazing thriller. One of my top books.
This was amazing! I really loved the sisterly love between the two sisters. The book was fast-paced and kept the reader guessing at every corner!
